An accident in Philadelphia’s historical district on Monday involving a car and three of the popular horse drawn carriages has left five people injured.
Police say that Thomas Gordon, 70, of Claymount, DE, traveled on North Sixth Street of the Independence Mall about 9:30 a.m. and rear-ended a horse carriage driven by Jane Stansbury, 23, as it stopped at a stop light at Race Street. The impact pushed the carriage forward, knocking aside two other carriages stopped at the stop light, finally coming to rest atop a fence and ejecting Stansbury from the carriage.
The accident caused one carriage to overturn and toss coachman, Brian Lasler, 42, to the roadway, breaking his arm and tearing off part of his ear.
Ambulances transported Stansbury and Lasler to Jefferson Hospital and the Gordon to Hahnemann University Hospital.
Two other carriage drivers sustained minor injuries.
Gordon had allegedly been tailgating Stansbury’s carriage and revving his engine before the accident occurred. Charges are pending the police investigation.
The carriage horses were unhurt because the harnesses are designed to release them if the carriage is in an accident. They were rounded up later.
