Woman Killed by Out of Control Van as She Mowed Her Yard

A van ran down a woman mowing her lawn and then crashed into a brick house on Long Island Tuesday morning, reports 1010Wins.com.
Nassau County police told the news station that about 10 a.m. a van driven by Kayla Gerdes, 18, of Freeport, and traveling on Cathedral Avenue in Hempstead jumped the curb, struck and killed a 69-year-old woman as she mowed her lawn. The van then crashed into the woman’s brick home, causing significant damage.
The name of the victim was not released. She died at the scene.
Gerdes was allegedly driving under the influence of drugs and without a license. Police charged her with 2nd degree manslaughter.
WCBSTV.com reports that according to witnesses, the van was speeding down Cathedral Avenue before the accident and that Gerdes and a male passenger in the van attempted to leave the scene of the accident on foot.
